Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth and change their colour, shape, size, or length.

Although veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create bright, white smiles with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth, they also protect the surface of damaged teeth and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments. Other benefits include durability, an improved smile appearance and the need for little-to-no removal of tooth structure compared to crowns.

Why Veneers?

Worn Enamel

Over time, the thin, hard translucent substance covering your teeth (enamel) may become worn, dulled and discolored.

Wear and Tear

Teeth naturally wear down as people age. Aged teeth are more likely to have chips, cracks or a generally uneven appearance.

Close Small Gaps

Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

You won’t usually need a temporary veneer between appointments and you can relax safe in the knowledge that no anesthetic (and therefore no injection) will be required at any point. Getting veneers from us was described by one patient as ‘like getting false nails’!

Frequently Asked Questions

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain for simpler cases.
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten your front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look whole again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth, with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.
The natural tooth is prepared by removing some of the shiny enamel in order to ensure the veneer will bond properly to the tooth.

The preparation itself is very minimal and usually the same thickness as the required veneer in order for the tooth to still be the same size.

Once the tooth is ready, we will take some impression moulds and send off to the technician to be made. We will do a shade match that you are happy with.

A temporary filling material will be placed which will last until the permanent one is placed. You will need to return to have the veneer fitted in around two weeks. You will be shown in the mirror prior to cemented in order to ensure you are fully happy before it is permanently bonded to the tooth.

Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held in place by a special, strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Some types of veneers don’t need any preparation at all. They also last longer than alternative options such as composite bonding.
After your veneers have been fitted your gums may feel a little sore but that is completely normal, this will settle down after a few days of gentle brushing. Veneers are very low maintenance they just require the same care as your natural teeth.
Porcelain veneers are very long last lasting and can last between 10-15 years, making them a great way to completely change the appearance of your smile without them being too high maintenance. Just like natural teeth, they can still chip or break, which can be repaired but if not then a new veneer will need to be fitted.
